What Advocates Need to Know About Strangulation & suffocation Assaults

Sponsored by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence

Alliance for HOPE International will join NCADV to discuss strangulation & suffocation assaults. Today, we know that if a victim is strangled even 1 time, she is 750% more likely to be killed by her abuser. How professionals’ approach, interview, & support to a traumatized victim is the key to breaking the cycle of abuse & improving our investigation, prosecution, & advocacy. The use of an advocate is critical to a victim’s emotional state & ability to heal from the violence. This session will address how all professionals can help victims understand the trauma they have experienced, the seriousness & lethality of non-fatal strangulation, how to make good use risk assessment tools, better use of the power & control wheel, understand why victims need to seek medical attention, advocate for screening for traumatic brain injuries in order to promote their health & safety. This session will also share practical tips when working with reluctant victims, new research, & new tools.
